I put this list together for guests at The Sundune, my 2-bedroom walkable condo in Palm Springs. These are the spots I'd tell a friend about. Some are within walking distance of the property. Others require a car. I'm going to be clear about which is which, because a $30 Uber home at midnight changes the math.

This is not a sponsored list. Nobody paid me to include them. There are 11 spots below, organized by what you're looking for. Skip to your category.

Classic Desert Cocktail Bars

La Perlita Mexican Food

901 Crossley Rd, Palm Springs | 760-778-8014

The best margaritas in Palm Springs are not at a hotel bar or a trendy strip spot. They're at La Perlita, a Mexican restaurant on Crossley that doesn't need to try hard because it's already good. I've had margaritas across this valley and these are the benchmark I measure everything else against.

Outdoor seating when the weather cooperates, which in Palm Springs is most of the year except the weeks that make you question your real estate decisions. Go before sunset if you can get a table outside.

Seymour's

233 E Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs | Hidden behind Mr. Lyons | seymoursf10.com

Seymour's is a cocktail bar hidden behind Mr. Lyons restaurant, accessible through an unmarked side entrance that makes finding it feel deliberate. Moody lighting, a large outdoor patio with bocce ball, and drinks that are genuinely well-made. Hours are 6pm to midnight daily.

The design salvages elements from the original 1938 building and mixes them with eclectic modern pieces. It feels like Palm Springs before Palm Springs was trendy, which is either nostalgic or ironic depending on how you're feeling. Either way it works.

Rooftop 262

262 S Palm Canyon Dr, Ste 200, Palm Springs | 760-699-6333 | rooftop262.com

The only proper rooftop bar on Palm Canyon Drive, perched on the second floor with unobstructed views of the San Jacinto Mountains. Gets busy Thursday through Saturday after 9pm. Good for a drink before dinner or as a first stop on a night out when you want to get your bearings before committing to a venue.

Full food menu if you want to eat up there. The mountain view at golden hour is worth arriving early for once.

The San Jacinto Mountains backdrop is the constant in Palm Springs nightlife. Rooftop 262 faces them directly.

Craft Beer

Las Palmas Brewing

461 N Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs | 760-992-5082 | laspalmasbrewing.com

Family-owned brewery on North Palm Canyon. Tuesday specials are worth knowing about if you're here midweek. The beer leans toward lighter ales and session IPAs, a rotating selection that doesn't take itself too seriously and works well in the heat.

The tacos are better than they need to be at a brewery. I don't fully understand it, but I stopped questioning it. Order them.

This one is walkable from The Sundune, which solves the getting-home problem before it starts. If you're staying on Tahquitz Canyon Way or nearby, you're looking at about a 12-minute walk each direction.

Tiki and Tropical

Bootlegger Tiki

1101 N Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs | bootleggertiki.com

Midcentury Polynesian bar on North Palm Canyon that shakes classic tiki drinks using house-made juices and syrups. Their 1944 Mai Tai gets mentioned constantly on Yelp and TripAdvisor and the praise is earned. The space is small and intimate so reservations on weekends make sense.

Hours: Mon-Thu 3-11pm, Fri-Sat 3pm-1am, Sun 3-11pm. Happy hour runs the first and last hour of the day. This is a slower-paced spot, not a dance bar. Good for a couple drinks and a real conversation.

Toucans Tiki Lounge

2100 N Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs | 760-416-7584 | toucanstikilounge.com

Toucans has been running drag in Palm Springs longer than any other bar in the city. Over-the-top tiki decor, kitschy cocktails, and a crowd that is genuinely there to have fun. Weekly programming includes Freakqncy Fridays, Saturday drag brunch at 1pm, Saturday night shows, and Stars of the Desert Sundays.

This is the place if you want spectacle along with your drinks. LGBTQ+ bar, all-welcoming crowd. Open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Palm Springs outdoor event at night with crowd and festive lighting

Palm Springs nightlife spans from quiet cocktail bars to full drag spectacle. Toucans and Hunters cover the latter.

Gay Bars and Clubs

Arenas Road, one block east of Palm Canyon Drive, is the center of Palm Springs LGBTQ+ nightlife. It's dense, walkable, and the energy there on a Friday night is different from anywhere else in the desert. Worth a visit even if you're not specifically looking for a gay bar.

Hunters

302 E Arenas Rd, Palm Springs | 760-323-0700 | hunterspalmsprings.com

Hunters has been on Arenas Road since 1998. Dance floor, themed parties, open daily until 2am. Friday and Saturday nights the dance floor fills early. The energy is inclusive and high but not exclusive or intimidating. Monday Latin Fever drag show starts at 10pm.

One of the consistently recommended stops for first-time Palm Springs visitors alongside Toucans.

Village Pub

266 S Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs | 760-323-3265 | villagepubps.com

Part sports bar, part nightclub, part casual restaurant. DJs start at 10pm daily and run until 2am. Happy hour runs 3-9pm every day of the week, which is a longer happy hour window than anywhere else on this list. Good spot if your group wants food and dancing in the same place without switching venues mid-night.

Hours: Mon-Fri 4pm-2am, Sat-Sun 11am-2am.

Live Music

Eight4Nine Restaurant and Lounge

849 N Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs | 760-325-8490 | eight4nine.com

Eight4Nine has a restaurant side and a lounge side, and the lounge side has live music and DJ nights on weekends. Crisp white interior, distinct seating areas including a swanky lounge, private dining rooms, and a patio that looks at the San Jacinto Mountains. The crowd skews slightly older, which at a nice cocktail lounge is usually a feature.

Hours: Mon-Thu 11am-9pm, Fri 11am-10pm, Sat 10am-10pm, Sun 10am-9pm.

The Nest

75188 CA-111, Indian Wells | 760-346-2314 | gotothenest.com

This one requires a car. Indian Wells is about 20 minutes from Palm Springs, and The Nest is the kind of place that needs no explanation once you've been there and needs a lot of explanation before you go.

Live music. Dancing. A full restaurant. A crowd that skews older than your average rooftop bar, which is a feature. The energy is high but not performative. People are there to have fun, not to perform having fun.

I tell guests: go once, tell me what you think. Everyone comes back with a story. It's been there forever and shows no signs of apologizing for it.

Late Night

For Food After Midnight

Sherman's Deli and Bakery (401 E Tahquitz Canyon Way) goes late, which earns it a spot on a bar guide even though it's technically a deli. If you need something to eat after The Nest at 11pm or want somewhere low-key that doesn't require making any decisions, Sherman's is the answer. Old Palm Springs institution. The pastrami is real.

Most of the Arenas Road bars (Hunters, Village Pub) run until 2am if you want to keep the night going in a proper venue rather than a deli booth, which is also a valid choice.

The Walkability Factor

If you're staying at The Sundune, here's the specific breakdown of what requires a car versus what doesn't.

Walkable (15 min or less): Las Palmas Brewing (~12 min), Village Pub (~8 min), Sherman's Deli (~10 min). The Arenas Road bars (Hunters) are about 10 minutes on foot from the property.

Short rideshare: Bootlegger Tiki, Rooftop 262, Eight4Nine, La Perlita, Seymour's, Toucans are all within a 5-7 minute Uber. Budget $10-14 one way depending on surge pricing.

Requires a car: The Nest (Indian Wells, 20 min drive). Worth it, but plan accordingly.

Palm Springs is more walkable than people expect coming from LA. The downtown strip is compact and Arenas Road is one block from Palm Canyon. You can hit three or four spots in a night without a car if you're staying centrally.

Downtown is small enough that walking between bars is faster than waiting for a rideshare on busy nights.
